 Viral Marketing mengacu pada teknik pemasaran dengan menggunakan sarana dan prasarana suatu jaringan sosial (social networking demi meraih suatu ‘brand awareness’ atau mencapai suatu target penjualan tertentu melalui suatu proses penyebaran seperti virus misalnya virus penyakit atau virus komputer.

Viral Marketing juga bisa berarti sebagai terjadinya suatu proses marketing dimana orang dianjurkan atau secara sukarela menyampaikan suatu pesan marketing kepada orang lain. Seperti misalnya seorang customer yang sangat puas atas produk/jasa/service yang dia peroleh akan secara sukarela menyampaikan suatu image positif terhadap produk/jasa/service yang telah ia beli, begitu juga sebaliknya terhadap seorang customer yang mengalami hal yang kurang baik akan dengan mudah menyampaikan hal tersebut kepada orang lain sehingga membentuk suatu image negatif terhadap produk/jasa/service tersebut.

Melalui sarana jaringan sosial (social marketing) maka suksesnya viral marketing ini sangat tergantung pada seberapa besar individu-individu di dalamnya membentuk dan menyampaikan suatu pesan marketing yang sampai kepadanya dan menyampaikannya satu sama lain. Misalnya bagaimana suatu kelompok mailing list merespon suatu pesan marketing yang disampaikan dalam bentuk tertentu misalnya saja tayangan video yang unik dan lucu terhadap suatu peristiwa tertentu dimana didalamnya diselipkan suatu pesan mengenai produk tertentu.

Dalam internet marketing, viral marketing cocok digunakan dalam mempromosikan produk tertentu. Misalnya melalui:

1. tayangan video, sekarang ini siapa yang tidak kenal dengan YouTube.com. Siapa pun bisa mengirimkan tayangan videonya ke youtube.com, tentu saja bagi para internet marketer hal ini merupakan peluang potentsial untuk mempopulerkan produknya/produk affiliasinya secara gratis. Tidak hanya ke youtube.com saja tapi bisa juga tayangan video tsb dimuat pada website yang bersangkutan, cuma masalahnya tidak semua internet marketer bisa membuat tayangan video sendiri karena berbagai hal seperti tidak mengerti secara teknis atau karena biaya yang cukup mahal. Hal tersebut bisa disiasati dengan mengambil video orang lain dengan hanya mengganti pesan marketing didalamnya (dengan catatan ada ijin untuk itu) dengan menggunakan suatu software yang disebut Affiliate Video Brander (lihat hasil AVB pada tayangan video dibawah).

2. Ebooks mengenai topik niche tertentu secara berbayar atau cuma-cuma: caranya buat ebooks mengenai niche tertentu, brand dengan produk anda kemudian sebarkan dengan menjual atau bagikan secara cuma-cuma. Salah satunya dengan menggunakan software Viral PDF, dimana suatu dokumen (yang telah anda selipkan pesan affiliasi) dapat dikonversi menjadi suatu file pdf terprotek. Ada juga membership yang menawarkan ebooks PLR termasuk dengan software brandernya ada yang gratis seperti Free Viral Ebooks dan ada pula yang berbayar.

3. Software mengenai program tertentu juga bisa diselipkan pesan-pesan produk atau affiliasi tertentu. Misalnya: program Graphics Wizard yang bisa diperoleh cuma-cuma, atau seperti Link Buzz, Blog Buzz, Keyword Buzz, ada juga games seperti ClassicGamesSite, atau Adsense Site Builder, Viral Mini Site dll.

Dan masih banyak lagi bentuk-bentuk lainnya, silakan anda ciptakan atau kreasikan sendiri.
